Atlanta Legal Aid Society seeks an attorney to work in its Disability Integration Project, which is a specialty unit in its Decatur office. The Disability Integration Project has three staff attorneys and two paralegals. The position is full-time and includes fringe benefits.
The Disability Integration Project advocates on behalf of adults and children with significant disabilities who are in institutions or who are at risk of entering institutions. Our work is based on Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, as interpreted by the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Olmstead v. L.C., which affirmed that the unnecessary segregation of people with disabilities is discrimination. Attorneys represent individuals with mental illness, physical disabilities, intellectual and developmental disabilities in administrative hearings, federal litigation, and IEPs. In addition to litigation, attorneys in the Disability Integration Project employ innovative advocacy strategies, including working with state agencies to secure cross-agency benefits for clients, media advocacy, and community education. The Disability Integration Project hosts a law school clinic in partnership with the Georgia State School of Law. Attorneys work with six students during the academic year.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates must possess excellent legal writing, oral advocacy and work ethic. Communication and listening skills, ability to work on a team and alone, adaptability, and appreciation of diversity are required. A Georgia Bar license or eligibility to sit for the next bar exam is required. Demonstrated commitment to public service, participation in law school clinics, trial advocacy courses, familiarity with areas of poverty law, and previous work with low-income persons are strongly preferred. Litigation experience is a plus.
Terms: The starting salary for a licensed attorney is $50,000+, depending on legal experience. The program provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, vacation, sick, and paid parental leave; health, life, and long and short-term disability insurance; partial payment for dependent health insurance; a salary reduction option for a flexible spending account; educational loan reimbursement up to $600 per month (after a $65 deductible and set off of other loan reimbursement amounts); CLE expenses; and Georgia Bar dues.
